Australians Evolution Mining targeted in latest cyber attack

Hackers increasingly targeting mining sector, expert warns

Resources company joins growing list of victims of cybercrime

Australian gold miner Evolution Mining has become the latest victim of a cyber attack, the company said on Monday. Evolution said it became aware of the attack last week, and that it had reported the incident to the Australian Cyber Security Centre.

The attack comes amid a spate of similar incidents that have plagued the resources sector in recent months. In July, cyber criminals targeted a major Australian iron ore producer, while a number of other mining companies have also been hit in recent years.

Cybersecurity expert Troy Hunt said the resources sector was an increasingly attractive target for hackers. "The resources sector is a critical part of the Australian economy, and it's no surprise that hackers are targeting it," he said.

"Mining companies often have a lot of valuable data, and they're often located in remote areas, which can make them more vulnerable to attack," he added.

Evolution Mining said it was working with cybersecurity experts to investigate the attack and mitigate any potential impact. The company said it did not believe any customer or employee data had been compromised.

The attack on Evolution Mining is a reminder of the growing threat of cybercrime to businesses of all sizes. Companies need to take steps to protect themselves from attack, such as implementing strong cybersecurity measures and educating employees about the risks of cybercrime.
