Vassar: 'I Had to Be Brought Back to Life'
Country star Phil Vassar is opening up about experiencing a heart attack and stroke which he says caused him to die twice last year.
"I had to be brought back to life," Vassar, 62, told Taste of Country. "It was the scariest thing that's ever happened to me."
Vassar said he was performing a show in February 2023 when he started to feel short of breath and lightheaded. He was taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a heart attack and a stroke.
"I was in the hospital for a week," Vassar said. "I had to have surgery to put in a defibrillator and a pacemaker."
Vassar said he is now recovering at home and is grateful to be alive.
"I'm so thankful for my family and friends who have been there for me," Vassar said. "I'm also thankful for the doctors and nurses who saved my life."
