Counsellors of State Bill 2022-23

Regency Not Required in UK for Over 200 Years

New Bill Appoints Counsellors of State

The Counsellors of State Bill 2022-23 has been introduced in response to a message from the Queen. The bill appoints Counsellors of State who will be able to perform certain functions of the Sovereign in the event that the Sovereign is unable to do so due to illness or absence abroad.

The current Counsellors of State are:

  • The Queen
  • The Prince of Wales
  • The Princess Royal
  • The Duke of Edinburgh

A Regency has not been required in the UK for more than 200 years. However, the Counsellors of State Bill 2022-23 will ensure that there is a clear and up-to-date framework in place to provide for the exercise of the Sovereign's functions in the event that they are unable to do so.
