Courts Decision Draws Mixed Reactions

ICJ Rules Israel Must Prevent Genocide in Gaza

Court's Decision Draws Mixed Reactions

Palestinians Welcome Ruling, Israel Disagrees

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ruled that Israel must take all necessary measures to prevent genocidal acts in the Gaza Strip, but it stopped short of ordering an immediate halt to its offensive in the territory.

The court's decision, which was issued on Friday, came in response to a case brought by South Africa seeking an emergency halt to Israel's offensive, which was launched in response to a Hamas-led attack on Oct. 1.

The ICJ judges assessed the facts and the law and ruled in favor of humanity. The ruling has direct consequences on the assault that was launched by Israel.

The ruling, to which 17 judges contributed (with some of them disagreeing), came on 26 January. At this stage of the proceedings, the Court is not called upon to determine the question of genocide.

The UN's top court is hearing Israel's response to the case.
